Quick and Easy Garden Trellis

Here is a quick and easy way to build a few trellises for your garden climbers.  My wife had purchased some climbing rose bushes which needed a trellis.  We looked at the 4' pre-made trellis sold at Lowe's and Home Depot and were less than impressed- especially for $30 a piece.

Here is what I came up with instead:

Materials Needed:
3 - 2"x4" x 8'  Pressure Treated Lumber  $4 ea.
1 - 4' x 8' 1/2" Lattice                               $24 ea.

Tools Needed:
Table saw with dado set  OR  Router with 1/2" rabbit bit
Brad Nailer OR Hammer
Power Drill / Screw gun
Wood Glue

First, cut the 2"x4"x8' lumber in half - making 2, 4-foot lengths.  (You should have 6 pieces total after cutting all 3 in half)  Then, cut the lattice into three sections, each one being 4 feet long by any width you prefer.  I made 2, 2 1/2-foot wide sections and 1, 3-foot wide section.  Note- you can purchase a 4th 2x4 and make 4, 2-foot wide trellis sections if you desire.  Similarly, you could purchase only 2 2x4s and make 2 4'x4' trellis sections.

Next- use your table saw with dado set to 1/2" width to cut a chanel in the length of the 2x4s to receive the lattice.  If you dont have a table saw with a dado set you can put a 1/2" rabbit in the back of the 2x4s.  The dado method gets you a better finished product, I think.

Assemble the sections by sliding the lattice into the slots you cut and fasten with wood glue and brads.  The final step is to instal them in your garden.  They can either lean up against a house or fence, or, if you have a wood fence (like we do) they can be mounted directly to the fence with exterior deck screws.  You can stain or paint the trellis sections as you desire- or leave them natural.
